Definition
Let be a group and let be a group homomorphism. Give the group ring the involution . The surgery obstruction groups of are the L-groups of this ring with involution, for . In the classification of manifolds up to diffeomorphism or homeomorphism one uses the simple version , built from based modules.
Remarks
Wall's theorem: let be a finite Poincaré complex of dimension with fundamental group and orientation character . A degree one normal map from a closed manifold has an obstruction . It vanishes if and only if is normally bordant to a simple homotopy equivalence. Example: for trivial, for . For the obstruction is , and for it is an Arf invariant. The groups depend on : by Shaneson's splitting, for trivial , so while . They are the algebraic terms of the surgery exact sequence.
