Definition
Let be a field, let be a vector space over , and let be its tensor algebra. Let be the two-sided ideal of generated by the elements with . The symmetric algebra of is the quotient ring
Remarks
is a commutative associative unital -algebra, graded by degree; its degree part is the -th symmetric power of . Universal property: every linear map from to a commutative associative unital -algebra extends uniquely to a unital algebra homomorphism . Example: if has basis , then , and has dimension ; for , the basis is . Non-example: for , the tensor algebra itself is not commutative, so it is not . The exterior algebra uses instead the ideal generated by the elements .
