Definition

Work over ℚ\Q with cochain differential graded algebras (dgas) that are graded-commutative: ab=(−1)∣a∣∣b∣baab = (-1)^{\abs{a}\abs{b}} ba for homogeneous aa and bb. For a graded vector space V=⨁n≥1VnV = \bigoplus_{n \ge 1} V^n, let ΛV\Lambda V be the free graded-commutative algebra on VV. It is the tensor product of the symmetric algebra on the even part and the exterior algebra on the odd part. Let Λ≥2V\Lambda^{\ge 2} V be its ideal of decomposable elements, the span of products of at least two elements of VV.

  1. A Sullivan algebra is a dga (ΛV,d)(\Lambda V, d) with V=V≥1V = V^{\ge 1} and an increasing chain of graded subspaces V(0)⊆V(1)⊆⋯V(0) \subseteq V(1) \subseteq \cdots with union VV. The chain must satisfy d(V(0))=0d(V(0)) = 0 and d(V(k))⊆ΛV(k−1)d(V(k)) \subseteq \Lambda V(k-1) for k≥1k \ge 1.
  2. A Sullivan algebra is minimal if d(V)⊆Λ≥2Vd(V) \subseteq \Lambda^{\ge 2} V.
  3. Let (A,dA)(A, d_A) be a graded-commutative dga with H0(A)=ℚH^0(A) = \Q. A Sullivan minimal model of it is a minimal Sullivan algebra (ΛV,d)(\Lambda V, d) with a dga map m ⁣:(ΛV,d)→(A,dA)m \colon (\Lambda V, d) \to (A, d_A) that is an isomorphism in cohomology.

The minimal model of a path-connected space XX is the minimal model of Sullivan's algebra APL(X)A_{PL}(X) of rational polynomial differential forms on XX. The cohomology of APL(X)A_{PL}(X) is the rational singular cohomology H∗(X;ℚ)H^*(X; \Q).

Remarks

If XX is simply connected and each Hn(X;ℚ)H^n(X; \Q) is finite-dimensional, then Vn≅Hom⁡(πn(X),ℚ)V^n \cong \Hom(\pi_n(X), \Q) for all n≥2n \ge 2, and V1=0V^1 = 0.

Example: for nn odd, (Λ(x),0)(\Lambda(x), 0) with ∣x∣=n\abs{x} = n is the minimal model of SnS^n. Here Λ(x)=ℚ⊕ℚx\Lambda(x) = \Q \oplus \Q x since x2=0x^2 = 0 by graded commutativity, which is H∗(Sn;ℚ)H^*(S^n; \Q).

Example: for nn even, the minimal model of SnS^n is (Λ(x,y),d)(\Lambda(x, y), d) with ∣x∣=n\abs{x} = n, ∣y∣=2n−1\abs{y} = 2n - 1, dx=0dx = 0 and dy=x2dy = x^2. Its cohomology has basis 1,x1, x: each xkx^k with k≥2k \ge 2 equals d(xk−2y)d(x^{k-2} y), and d(xky)=xk+2≠0d(x^k y) = x^{k+2} \ne 0.

Non-example: (Λ(x,y),d)(\Lambda(x, y), d) with ∣y∣=1\abs{y} = 1, ∣x∣=2\abs{x} = 2 and dy=xdy = x is a Sullivan algebra but not minimal, since dy=xdy = x is not decomposable. It is acyclic in positive degrees, and its minimal model is ℚ\Q.
