Symplectic group

Description

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be a field, let n≥1n \ge 1, and let Ω=(0In−In0),\Omega = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & I_n \\ -I_n & 0 \end{pmatrix}, a 2n×2n2n \times 2n block matrix, where InI_n is the n×nn \times n identity matrix. The symplectic group is Sp⁡(2n,𝕂)={M∈GL⁡(2n,𝕂):MTΩM=Ω}.\operatorname{Sp}(2n, \mathbb{K}) = \set{M \in \operatorname{GL}(2n, \mathbb{K}) : M^T \Omega M = \Omega}. It is a group under matrix multiplication, a subgroup of the general linear group. Check: ITΩI=ΩI^T \Omega I = \Omega; if MTΩM=ΩM^T \Omega M = \Omega and NTΩN=ΩN^T \Omega N = \Omega, then (MN)TΩ(MN)=NT(MTΩM)N=Ω(MN)^T \Omega (MN) = N^T (M^T \Omega M) N = \Omega; and multiplying MTΩM=ΩM^T \Omega M = \Omega by (MT)−1(M^T)^{-1} on the left and M−1M^{-1} on the right gives (M−1)TΩM−1=Ω(M^{-1})^T \Omega M^{-1} = \Omega.

Remarks

The group Sp⁡(2n,𝕂)\operatorname{Sp}(2n, \mathbb{K}) is the group of linear maps of 𝕂2n\mathbb{K}^{2n} that preserve the standard symplectic form ω(x,y)=xTΩy\omega(x, y) = x^T \Omega y; see symplectic vector space. Every symplectic matrix has determinant 11, so Sp⁡(2n,𝕂)\operatorname{Sp}(2n, \mathbb{K}) lies in the special linear group. For n=1n = 1, every 2×22 \times 2 matrix MM satisfies MTΩM=(det⁡M) ΩM^T \Omega M = (\det M)\, \Omega, so Sp⁡(2,𝕂)=SL⁡(2,𝕂)\operatorname{Sp}(2, \mathbb{K}) = \operatorname{SL}(2, \mathbb{K}). For 𝕂=ℝ\mathbb{K} = \R it is a connected noncompact Lie group of dimension n(2n+1)n(2n + 1). The notation Sp⁡(n)\operatorname{Sp}(n) is also used for the compact symplectic group, the quaternionic unitary group, which is a different group.
