Synchrotron radiation
Builds on Electromagnetic radiationMagnetic fieldLorentz factor
Definition
A particle of charge and mass moves in a uniform magnetic field at speed near the speed of light . So its Lorentz factor satisfies . Under the Lorentz force the particle moves on a helix around the field direction. Its and its pitch angle between velocity and field stay constant. Synchrotron radiation is the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the particle because of this acceleration.
Remarks
Example: for an electron of charge and mass , the radiated power averaged over isotropic pitch angles is . Here , is the Thomson cross-section and is the energy density of the field in SI units. The spectrum of one electron peaks near the critical frequency , where is the non-relativistic gyrofrequency. If the electrons have an energy distribution , the emitted spectrum in the optically thin regime is . Non-example: radiation of slow electrons with in a magnetic field is called cyclotron radiation; it is emitted at the gyrofrequency and its harmonics, not over a broad band.
