Definition
Let be a locally compact group that acts on a space with a Borel structure. Assume that each map is a Borel bijection. Let be a Hilbert space. A system of imprimitivity for based on is a pair where:
- is a unitary representation of on ;
- is a projection-valued measure on the Borel sets of , with values projections on ;
- for every and every Borel set .
Remarks
In most uses, for a closed subgroup , with acting by left multiplication.
Example: let be a discrete group acting on a countable set , let with basis , let , and let be multiplication by the indicator . For , , which is if and otherwise. This is , so clause 3 holds.
Non-example: take acting by translation, , the same , but for all . Then clause 3 would give , which is false.
The induced representation has a canonical system of imprimitivity based on , in which multiplies functions by . For second countable , the Mackey imprimitivity theorem says that every system of imprimitivity based on is equivalent to one of these.
