Sz.-Nagy's dilation theorem
Builds on Hilbert spaceUnitary operatorOrthogonal projection
Statement
Let be a Hilbert space and let be a contraction, that is, a bounded linear operator with . Then there is a Hilbert space that contains as a closed subspace. There is also a unitary operator such that where is the orthogonal projection of onto . Moreover, can be chosen as the closed span of . With this choice, the pair is unique up to a unitary isomorphism that fixes .
Remarks
Proof idea: the defect operator satisfies . On , the operator is an isometry, and it compresses to the powers of on the first copy of . Every isometry extends to a unitary operator on a larger space, which gives .
Example: the unilateral shift on is a contraction, and the bilateral shift on is a unitary dilation of it.
The compression property holds only for powers ; for negative one has instead.
Going deeper
For a student
The dilation turns questions about a contraction into questions about a unitary operator, where the spectral theorem is available. An immediate consequence is von Neumann's inequality. The minimal unitary dilation is the starting point of the Sz.-Nagy–Foias model theory of contractions and of the commutant lifting theorem.
