von Neumann's inequality
Builds on Hilbert spacePolynomial function
Statement
Let be a complex Hilbert space and let be a bounded linear operator with . Then for every polynomial with complex coefficients,
Remarks
Proof idea: by Sz.-Nagy's dilation theorem there is a unitary on a larger space with for , so . Hence . Since is unitary, its spectrum lies on the unit circle. So is the maximum of on the spectrum, which is at most the maximum of on the closed unit disc.
Example: for the nilpotent contraction and , one has with norm , which is at most .
The Hilbert space structure matters. On a Banach space a contraction need not satisfy the inequality. The inequality extends to two commuting contractions (Andô's theorem) but fails in general for three commuting contractions.

For a student
The inequality lets one define for every in the disc algebra, the uniform closure of the polynomials on the closed disc, with . This is the start of the holomorphic functional calculus of contractions developed by Sz.-Nagy and Foias. Its failure for three commuting contractions shows that multivariable operator theory differs from the one-variable theory.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
