Definition

Let KK be an algebraic number field with algebraic closure K‾\overline{K} and absolute Galois group GK=Gal⁡(K‾/K)G_K = \Gal(\overline{K}/K), and let EE be an elliptic curve over KK. For each place vv of KK, let KvK_v be the completion of KK at vv. Fix an embedding K‾→Kv‾\overline{K} \to \overline{K_v}; it identifies GKvG_{K_v} with a decomposition subgroup of GKG_K. Let H1(K,E)=H1(GK,E(K‾))H^1(K, E) = H^1(G_K, E(\overline{K})) be the first Galois cohomology group, and similarly H1(Kv,E)=H1(GKv,E(Kv‾))H^1(K_v, E) = H^1(G_{K_v}, E(\overline{K_v})). Let the map below have as components the restrictions, with the product over all places vv of KK. The Tate–Shafarevich group of EE over KK is Ш(E/K)=ker⁡(H1(K,E)→∏vH1(Kv,E)).\text{Ш}(E/K) = \ker\left( H^1(K, E) \to \prod_{v} H^1(K_v, E) \right).

Remarks

The group H1(K,E)H^1(K, E) classifies principal homogeneous spaces of EE: curves CC over KK with a simply transitive action of EE defined over KK. A class is trivial exactly when CC has a point over KK, so Ш(E/K)\text{Ш}(E/K) consists of the classes of such curves CC that have a point over every KvK_v.

Example: Selmer's curve C ⁣:3x3+4y3+5z3=0C \colon 3x^3 + 4y^3 + 5z^3 = 0 in ℙℚ2\mathbb{P}^2_{\Q} has points over ℝ\R and over every ℚp\Q_p, but no point over ℚ\Q. It is a principal homogeneous space for its Jacobian E ⁣:x3+y3+60z3=0E \colon x^3 + y^3 + 60z^3 = 0, so it gives a nonzero element of Ш(E/ℚ)\text{Ш}(E/\Q).

Non-example: let CC be a principal homogeneous space of EE over ℚ\Q with C(ℝ)=∅C(\R) = \emptyset. Its class in H1(ℚ,E)H^1(\Q, E) has nonzero restriction at the real place, so it is not in Ш(E/ℚ)\text{Ш}(E/\Q).

The group Ш(E/K)\text{Ш}(E/K) is a torsion abelian group, and each of its nn-torsion subgroups is finite, by the finiteness of the Selmer group. It is conjectured to be finite; when it is finite, the Cassels–Tate pairing shows that its order is a perfect square. The letter Ш is the Cyrillic letter sha.
