Counterexample
Fix a prime and . Let be a finite -local spectrum of type . Let be a self-map, as given by the periodicity theorem among the Ravenel conjectures. The telescope of is the homotopy colimit The telescope conjecture asserted that the natural map is an equivalence, where is Bousfield localization at the -th Morava K-theory. The conjecture is false for every prime and every height . In 2023 Burklund, Hahn, Levy and Schlank showed that for such and the map is not an equivalence.
Remarks
The telescope does not depend on the choice of , and its Bousfield class depends only on ; the localization at it is written . So the conjecture says . At height the conjecture is true: Mahowald proved it for and Miller for odd. The counterexample of Burklund, Hahn, Levy and Schlank uses algebraic K-theory to build -local spectra that are not -local. It shows that the homotopy of telescopes is genuinely larger than what -local computations see.
