Definition
Let be a field, let , and let be a tensor, that is, an array of size (see tensor product). A tensor decomposition of is an expression of in one of the following standard forms.
- A canonical polyadic (CP) decomposition of length is an identity
- A Tucker decomposition with multilinear size is an identity where is a core tensor of size and .
Remarks
The smallest length of a CP decomposition of is the tensor rank of . A CP decomposition is a Tucker decomposition whose core is diagonal, with . Example: the array with and all other entries has the CP decomposition of length . Check: the first term has only the entry equal to , and the second only the entry . Non-example: alone is not a CP decomposition of this array, since it misses the entry . For , a CP decomposition is a factorization with columns in and , and the singular value decomposition gives one of minimal length. For , Kruskal's theorem gives conditions under which a CP decomposition of minimal length is essentially unique. Here essentially unique means unique up to the order of the terms and the scaling of the factors. This has no analogue for matrices: a minimal factorization of a matrix of rank at least is never unique in this sense.
