Tensor product of Hilbert spaces
Builds on Hilbert spaceTensor product of vector spacesOrthonormal basis
Definition
Let be or , and let and be Hilbert spaces over . Let be their algebraic tensor product over . There is exactly one inner product on such that for all and . The tensor product of Hilbert spaces is the completion of for this inner product.
Remarks
If and are orthonormal bases of and , then is an orthonormal basis of .
Example: is unitarily equivalent to , by . Both sides have orthonormal bases indexed by , and the map sends one onto the other. Similarly, for -finite measure spaces, is , with sent to .
Non-example: if and are infinite-dimensional, the algebraic tensor product with the inner product above is not complete. For instance, converges in the completion but is not a finite sum of elementary tensors. In finite dimension no completion is needed, and .
Other completions of , for instance the projective tensor product, are Banach spaces with different norms.
