Classical thermodynamics, heat transfer Definition
Thermal diffusivity
Definition
Let a homogeneous material have thermal conductivity , density and specific heat capacity at constant pressure . Its thermal diffusivity is Its unit is .
Remarks
With constant , conduction without heat sources obeys the heat equation .
Example: for copper, , and in SI units. So square metres per second.
Non-example: the conductivity alone is not the diffusivity. Two materials with the same but different heat capacities warm at different rates.
The ratio , where is the kinematic viscosity of a fluid, is the Prandtl number.
