Thermodynamic work
Builds on Thermodynamic systemQuasistatic process
Definition
Let be a thermodynamic system. The work done on in a process is the energy transferred to by macroscopic forces of the surroundings. These forces act through changes of external parameters of , such as its volume. Transfers of energy as heat or with matter are not work. For a quasistatic process of a fluid with pressure and volume ,
Remarks
Compress moles of ideal gas quasistatically at constant temperature from volume to . Then , and . Heating a gas in a rigid container is not work: the volume does not change, and the energy enters as heat. Some texts write for the work done by the system, which changes the sign.
