Definition

Let an isotropic conductor carry an electric current density JJ and a heat flux JQJ_Q at absolute temperature T(x)T(x). Let EE be the effective electric field, the electric field plus the gradient of the chemical potential of the carriers divided by their charge. In the linear regime the conductor obeys J=σ(E−S∇T),JQ=ΠJ−κ∇T,J = \sigma (E - S \nabla T), \qquad J_Q = \Pi J - \kappa \nabla T, where σ>0\sigma > 0 is the electrical conductivity and κ>0\kappa > 0 the thermal conductivity at zero current. The thermoelectric effect is the coupling of JJ and JQJ_Q through the coefficients SS and Π\Pi, in three forms.

  1. Seebeck effect: at zero current, a temperature gradient produces the field E=S∇TE = S \nabla T; SS is the Seebeck coefficient.
  2. Peltier effect: at uniform temperature, a current carries the heat flux JQ=ΠJJ_Q = \Pi J; Π\Pi is the Peltier coefficient.
  3. Thomson effect: a steady current along a temperature gradient produces heat reversibly at the rate −𝒦 J⋅∇T-\mathcal{K}\, J \cdot \nabla T per unit volume. This adds to the Joule heating ∣J∣2/σ\abs{J}^2/\sigma, and 𝒦\mathcal{K} is the Thomson coefficient.

Remarks

Example: let a thermocouple be made of two conductors AA and BB, with junctions at temperatures T1T_1 and T2T_2. Its open-circuit voltage is ∫T1T2(SB−SA) dT\int_{T_1}^{T_2} (S_B - S_A)\, dT, up to a sign that depends on the orientation. Non-example: a conductor whose heat flux is −κ∇T-\kappa \nabla T and whose current is σE\sigma E, with no coupling, shows no thermoelectric effect, since S=Π=0S = \Pi = 0. The energy balance gives 𝒦=dΠ/dT−S\mathcal{K} = d\Pi/dT - S. The signs of SS, Π\Pi and 𝒦\mathcal{K} depend on conventions that vary between texts.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
