Definition

Let Λ⊂ℝ2\Lambda \subset \R^2 be a Bravais lattice with reciprocal lattice Λ∗\Lambda^*, so that the Brillouin zone with opposite edges identified is the torus T=ℝ2/Λ∗T = \R^2 / \Lambda^*. Let k↦H(k)k \mapsto H(k) be a smooth family of Hermitian Bloch Hamiltonians, with H(k+G)H(k + G) unitarily equivalent to H(k)H(k) for G∈Λ∗G \in \Lambda^*. Let EmE_m be a band of the band structure that does not touch any other band. Let uku_k be a normalized eigenvector of H(k)H(k) for Em(k)E_m(k), chosen smoothly on an open set of kk. The Berry connection and Berry curvature of the band are 𝒜(k)=i⟨uk,∇kuk⟩,ℱ(k)=∂k1𝒜2−∂k2𝒜1=−2Im⁡⟨∂k1uk,∂k2uk⟩.\mathcal{A}(k) = i\langle u_k, \nabla_k u_k \rangle, \qquad \mathcal{F}(k) = \partial_{k_1}\mathcal{A}_2 - \partial_{k_2}\mathcal{A}_1 = -2 \operatorname{Im} \langle \partial_{k_1} u_k, \partial_{k_2} u_k \rangle. The TKNN invariant (or Chern number) of the band is C=12π∫Tℱ(k) d2k.C = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_{T} \mathcal{F}(k) \, d^2 k.

Remarks

The curvature ℱ\mathcal{F} does not depend on the phase of uku_k, so it is defined on all of TT even when no global smooth choice of uku_k exists. The number CC is an integer: it is the first Chern number of the line bundle over TT formed by the eigenvectors. Sign conventions for ℱ\mathcal{F} and CC differ between sources. For a band insulator with the Fermi energy in a gap, the Hall conductance is σxy=e2h∑m filledCm\sigma_{xy} = \frac{e^2}{h} \sum_{m \text{ filled}} C_m.

Example: the two-band model H(k)=d(k)⋅(σx,σy,σz)H(k) = d(k) \cdot (\sigma_x, \sigma_y, \sigma_z) with Pauli matrices σj\sigma_j and d(k)=(sin⁡k1,sin⁡k2,M+cos⁡k1+cos⁡k2)d(k) = (\sin k_1, \sin k_2, M + \cos k_1 + \cos k_2) on Λ=ℤ2\Lambda = \Z^2. The lower band has ∣C∣\abs{C} equal to the degree of d/∣d∣ ⁣:T→S2d/\abs{d} \colon T \to S^2 in absolute value. For 0<M<20 < M < 2, the direction (0,0,1)(0, 0, 1) is reached at k=(0,0),(π,0),(0,π)k = (0,0), (\pi, 0), (0, \pi) with local degrees +1,−1,−1+1, -1, -1, so ∣C∣=1\abs{C} = 1; for M>2M > 2 it is also reached at (π,π)(\pi, \pi) with local degree +1+1, so C=0C = 0.

Non-example: at M=2M = 2 the vector d(k)d(k) vanishes at k=(π,π)k = (\pi, \pi), the two bands touch, and CC is not defined.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
