Definition

Let RR be a connective associative ring spectrum, and let TT be the circle group. Let X=THH(R)X = THH(R) be its topological Hochschild homology, with its TT-action. For a group GG acting on a spectrum YY, write YhGY^{hG} for the homotopy fixed points. For finite GG, write YtGY^{tG} for the Tate construction, the cofiber of the norm map YhG→YhGY_{hG} \to Y^{hG}. The spectrum XX is cyclotomic: for each prime pp there is a TT-equivariant Frobenius map φp ⁣:X→XtCp\varphi_p \colon X \to X^{tC_p}, where Cp⊆TC_p \subseteq T is the subgroup of order pp. Applying (−)hT(-)^{hT} gives maps φphT ⁣:XhT→(XtCp)hT\varphi_p^{hT} \colon X^{hT} \to (X^{tC_p})^{hT}. There are also canonical maps canp ⁣:XhT→(XtCp)hT\mathrm{can}_p \colon X^{hT} \to (X^{tC_p})^{hT}. The topological cyclic homology of RR is the fiber TC(R)=fib⁡(XhT→ (φphT−canp)p ∏p(XtCp)hT).TC(R) = \operatorname{fib}\Big( X^{hT} \xrightarrow{\ (\varphi_p^{hT} - \mathrm{can}_p)_p\ } \prod_p (X^{tC_p})^{hT} \Big).

Remarks

This formula is due to Nikolaus and Scholze. It recovers, in the pp-complete setting, the original definition of Bökstedt, Hsiang and Madsen as a homotopy limit of fixed point spectra of THH(R)THH(R) under restriction and Frobenius maps. The spectrum XhTX^{hT} is also written TC−(R)TC^-(R). Example: after pp-completion, π∗TC(𝔽p)\pi_* TC(\mathbb{F}_p) is ℤp\Z_p in degrees 00 and −1-1 and zero otherwise. Non-example: TCTC is not algebraic K-theory, since π−1TC(𝔽p)p∧≠0\pi_{-1} TC(\mathbb{F}_p)^\wedge_p \neq 0, while the K-theory of a ring has no negative homotopy in this case.
