Definition
An elementary topos is a category such that:
- has all finite limits (it is finitely complete);
- is Cartesian closed: for all objects and there is an exponential object ;
- has a subobject classifier .
Remarks
An equivalent definition asks for finite limits and power objects: for each object , an object with a natural bijection between subobjects of and morphisms ; then . Every topos also has finite colimits, and its subobjects of any object form a Heyting algebra. Example: is a topos: it has finite limits, the exponential is the set of functions , and classifies subsets. Example: for a group , the category of -sets is a topos with and trivial action. Non-example: the category of real vector spaces fails clause 3. Its terminal object is , so the pullback of along is . If classifies the zero subspace, then is injective, so , yet too, and uniqueness fails. Non-example: the category of topological spaces has finite limits but is not Cartesian closed, so it fails clause 2.
