Torque
Builds on Cross product
Definition
Let a force act at a point with position , and let be a reference point. The torque, or moment, of about is where is the cross product. For forces acting at points , the total torque about is .
Remarks
The size of the torque is , where is the angle between and . Its direction is the axis of the turning it tends to cause, by the right-hand rule.
Example: , and give , a turning about the vertical axis.
Non-example: a force along the line through and , such as above, has zero torque about , although it is not zero. Changing the reference point gives , so the total torque does not depend on the reference point when the total force is zero.
