Train track
Definition
Let be a smooth surface. A train track in is a finite graph embedded in , with vertices called switches and edges called branches, such that:
- each branch is a smoothly embedded arc, and at each switch all branches that end there are tangent to one common line;
- at each switch, at least one branch arrives from each of the two directions along this line;
- no component of is an open disc with , or cusps, or an open annulus with no cusps.
Here a cusp of a complementary region is a corner of its boundary at a switch where two branches arriving from the same direction meet.
Remarks
Clauses 1 and 2 let a smooth path run along through each switch without turning back. Clause 3 rules out regions that would let curves carried by be shortened or be parallel copies of each other. A weight on assigns a number to each branch . At each switch, the total weight arriving from one side must equal the total arriving from the other side. Integer weights correspond to multicurves carried by .
Example: let be a closed orientable surface of genus and a non-separating simple closed curve. Put one switch on ; the rest of is one branch leaving the switch in one direction and coming back from the other, so clauses 1 and 2 hold. The complement is a surface of genus with two boundary circles, neither a disc nor an annulus, so clause 3 holds.
Non-example: two disjoint parallel copies of , each with one switch, bound an annulus with no cusps between them, so clause 3 fails.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
