Transcritical bifurcation
Builds on Equilibrium pointSmooth function
Definition
Let be smooth, and consider the family of scalar equations with parameter . Assume for all , so that is an equilibrium point for every . The family has a transcritical bifurcation at if:
- ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
Under these conditions, besides , the equilibria near form a curve with and . So this second branch crosses the branch at . Since changes sign at , the equilibrium changes stability there, and the other branch changes stability the opposite way.
Example: . Then , , and . The second branch is , with .
Non-example: . Here , so clause 3 fails; this family has a pitchfork bifurcation instead.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
