Definition
Let be a group and let be a subgroup of finite index . Let be the commutator subgroup of , so that is the abelianisation of . Choose elements of such that is the disjoint union of the left cosets . For and each , there are a unique index and a unique with . The transfer is the map given by
Remarks
The product is taken in the abelian group , so its order does not matter. One proves that is a group homomorphism and that it does not depend on the choice of .
Example: if is abelian, then and . Since permutes , the factors cancel, and . For and , the transfer is .
Non-example: take the product in itself, without passing to . In general it depends on the order of the factors and on the choice of the , so it does not give a well-defined homomorphism to .
A main application is Burnside's normal -complement theorem. Let be a Sylow -subgroup of a finite group that lies in the centre of its normaliser. Then has a normal subgroup with and .

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
