Definition
Let be a set. Let be the set of all maps , with the product given by composition. A transformation semigroup on is a nonempty subset such that for all . It is often written as the pair .
Remarks
Composition of maps is associative, so a transformation semigroup is a semigroup. The whole set is the full transformation monoid; for with elements it has elements. Its invertible elements form the symmetric group on . Every semigroup is isomorphic to a transformation semigroup on the set , by sending to the map .
Example: the constant maps , for . For all , , so they form a transformation semigroup.
Non-example: on , let swap and , and let be the constant map to . The set is not closed under composition, because is not in it.
