Commutative algebra Integral extensions Proposition
Transitivity of integrality
Builds on Integral elementIntegral extensionFinitely generated module
Statement
Let be commutative rings. If is integral over and is integral over , then is integral over .
Remarks
Let and take a monic relation with . Each is integral over , so is a finitely generated -module. The relation shows that is a finitely generated -module, so is a finitely generated -module. Hence is integral over by the module criterion for integrality.
Example: is integral over , as a root of , and is integral over . So is integral over ; indeed it is a root of .
Going deeper
For a student
The proof does not build the monic polynomial over directly; it passes through finite generation of modules. The same argument shows that the elements of integral over form a subring, the integral closure of in . Transitivity then shows that the integral closure is integrally closed in .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
