Mechanics of deformable solids Definition
Transverse isotropy
Builds on Anisotropic elasticityElasticity tensor
Definition
Let be the elasticity tensor of a linear elastic material, and let be a unit vector. For a rotation , let . The material is transversely isotropic with axis if for every rotation about the axis .
Remarks
Example: with axis and Voigt notation, the stiffness matrix of a transversely isotropic material has the form with the independent constants . Non-example: a cubic material has , and . If , the rotation by about changes . So such a cubic material is not transversely isotropic. An isotropic material is transversely isotropic for every axis; many authors exclude this case. The plane normal to is the plane of isotropy.
