Functional analysis Definition
Type and cotype
Builds on Banach space
Definition
Let be a real or complex Banach space. For vectors in , write the quadratic mean of the norm over all choices of signs.
- Let . The space has type if there is a constant with for all and all .
- Let . The space has cotype if there is a constant with for all and all .
Remarks
Example: a Hilbert space has type and cotype with . Expanding the squares, the cross terms cancel in the average over signs. So exactly.
Non-example: has no type . For the unit vectors , every sign sum has norm , so . The right side of the type inequality is , and fails for large .
Every Banach space has type , by the triangle inequality. Type implies type for , and cotype implies cotype for . By the Kahane inequality, the quadratic mean in can be replaced by the plain mean of the norm, with other constants. For , the space has type and cotype .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
