Definition

Let LL be a signature, let II be a nonempty set, and let 𝒰\mathcal{U} be an ultrafilter on II. For each i∈Ii \in I let MiM_i be an LL-structure with nonempty domain. Let P=∏i∈IMiP = \prod_{i \in I} M_i be the Cartesian product of the domains. For a,b∈Pa, b \in P write aβˆΌπ’°ba \sim_{\mathcal{U}} b when {i∈I:a(i)=b(i)}βˆˆπ’°\set{i \in I : a(i) = b(i)} \in \mathcal{U}; this is an equivalence relation on PP, and [a][a] denotes the class of aa. The ultraproduct ∏i∈IMi/𝒰\prod_{i \in I} M_i / \mathcal{U} is the LL-structure with domain P/βˆΌπ’°P / {\sim_{\mathcal{U}}} and the following interpretations:

  1. for an nn-ary function symbol ff, f([a1],…,[an])=[b]f([a_1], \dots, [a_n]) = [b], where b(i)=fMi(a1(i),…,an(i))b(i) = f^{M_i}(a_1(i), \dots, a_n(i));
  2. for an nn-ary relation symbol RR, R([a1],…,[an])R([a_1], \dots, [a_n]) holds if and only if {i∈I:(a1(i),…,an(i))∈RMi}βˆˆπ’°\set{i \in I : (a_1(i), \dots, a_n(i)) \in R^{M_i}} \in \mathcal{U};
  3. for a constant symbol cc, its value is [b][b], where b(i)=cMib(i) = c^{M_i}.

If all MiM_i equal one structure MM, the ultraproduct is called the ultrapower MI/𝒰M^I / \mathcal{U}.

Remarks

The interpretations do not depend on the chosen representatives, because 𝒰\mathcal{U} is closed under finite intersections and supersets.

Example: let 𝒰\mathcal{U} be a non-principal ultrafilter on β„•\N and let Mi=ℝM_i = \R for all ii. The ultrapower ℝℕ/𝒰\R^{\N} / \mathcal{U} is the ordered field of hyperreal numbers. The class of a=(0,1,2,3,… )a = (0, 1, 2, 3, \dots) is larger than the class of each constant sequence (r,r,r,… )(r, r, r, \dots), since {i:i>r}\set{i : i > r} is cofinite and so lies in 𝒰\mathcal{U}.

Non-example: replace 𝒰\mathcal{U} by the FrΓ©chet filter β„±\mathcal{F} of cofinite subsets of β„•\N, which is a filter but not an ultrafilter. The same construction gives a ring ℝℕ/β„±\R^{\N} / \mathcal{F}, but it is not a field. The classes of (1,0,1,0,… )(1, 0, 1, 0, \dots) and (0,1,0,1,… )(0, 1, 0, 1, \dots) are both nonzero, because neither sequence is zero on a cofinite set, but their product is the class of 00.

If 𝒰\mathcal{U} is the principal ultrafilter at i0∈Ii_0 \in I, the ultraproduct is isomorphic to Mi0M_{i_0}.
