Uniform structure of a topological group
Builds on Topological groupUniform spaceEntourageNeighbourhood
Definition
Let be a topological group with identity , and let be the set of neighbourhoods of . For put The left uniform structure of is the uniform structure on whose entourages are the subsets of that contain some with . The right uniform structure of is defined in the same way with the sets .
Remarks
Both uniform structures induce the given topology of : the neighbourhoods of are the sets for the left one and for the right one, with . Example: for , the set with is , so both uniformities are the uniformity of the usual metric. If is abelian, then for every , so the two structures coincide. In general they differ; the inversion map carries one to the other. Some authors also use the two-sided uniformity, generated by the sets .
