object

Unitary group

Description

Let n≥1n \ge 1. The unitary group is the set U(n)={U∈Mn(C):U∗U=In}U(n) = \{U \in M_n(\C) : U^* U = I_n\} of complex n×nn \times n unitary matrices, with matrix multiplication. It is a subgroup of the general linear group GLn(C)GL_n(\C).

Remarks

It is the group of linear isometries of Cn\C^n with the standard inner product. U(1)U(1) is the circle group {z∈C:∣z∣=1}\{z \in \C : \abs{z} = 1\}. The unitary matrices with determinant 11 form the special unitary group SU(n)SU(n). U(n)U(n) is a compact connected Lie group of real dimension n2n^2.

Explanations

L1 human

The unitary group collects all complex matrices that keep the length of every vector. For n=1n = 1, these are multiplications by complex numbers of absolute value 11, that is, rotations of the complex plane. The group appears throughout physics.

  • section Invariants: a table of the main invariants (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
