Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be a commutative -algebra. Then is unramified over , and the structure map is an unramified morphism, if both conditions hold:
- is an -algebra of finite type.
- The module of Kähler differentials is zero.
Remarks
Some authors, following Grothendieck, require to be finitely presented rather than only of finite type; the two agree when is Noetherian. Condition 2 alone is called formally unramified. An equivalent form, for of finite type, is a condition on each prime ideal of , with . One needs in the localization. One also needs the residue field of to be a finite separable extension of that of .
Example: let and . It is of finite type, and , since is a unit in .
Non-example for clause 2: for over , one gets ; the prime ramifies. Non-example for clause 1: the algebraic closure of has , because every element is separable algebraic over , but it is not of finite type over .
