Definition

Let KK be a field and let Γ\Gamma be a totally ordered abelian group, written additively. Add to Γ\Gamma a symbol ∞\infty with γ<∞\gamma < \infty and γ+∞=∞+γ=∞+∞=∞\gamma + \infty = \infty + \gamma = \infty + \infty = \infty for all γ∈Γ\gamma \in \Gamma. A valuation on KK with values in Γ\Gamma is a map v ⁣:K→Γ∪{∞}v \colon K \to \Gamma \cup \set{\infty} such that:

  1. v(x)=∞v(x) = \infty if and only if x=0x = 0.
  2. v(xy)=v(x)+v(y)v(xy) = v(x) + v(y) for all x,y∈Kx, y \in K.
  3. v(x+y)≥min⁡(v(x),v(y))v(x + y) \ge \min(v(x), v(y)) for all x,y∈Kx, y \in K.

The subgroup v(K×)v(K^\times) of Γ\Gamma is the value group of vv. The pair (K,v)(K, v) is a valued field.

Remarks

Example: for a prime pp, the p-adic valuation vpv_p on ℚ\Q with values in ℤ\Z is a valuation. If x=pma/bx = p^m a/b and y=pnc/dy = p^n c/d with a,b,c,da, b, c, d prime to pp and m≤nm \le n, then xy=pm+nac/(bd)xy = p^{m+n} ac/(bd) gives clause 2, and x+y=pm(ad+pn−mcb)/(bd)x + y = p^m (ad + p^{n-m} cb)/(bd) gives vp(x+y)≥mv_p(x + y) \ge m, which is clause 3. Example: on the field k(t)k(t) of rational functions over a field kk, the map f/g↦deg⁡g−deg⁡ff/g \mapsto \deg g - \deg f is a valuation with values in ℤ\Z. Non-example: the map v ⁣:ℚ→ℤ∪{∞}v \colon \Q \to \Z \cup \set{\infty} with v(0)=∞v(0) = \infty and v(x)=1v(x) = 1 for x≠0x \ne 0 fails clause 2, since v(1⋅1)=1≠2=v(1)+v(1)v(1 \cdot 1) = 1 \ne 2 = v(1) + v(1). Every field has the trivial valuation, with v(x)=0v(x) = 0 for all x≠0x \ne 0. Clauses 1 and 2 give v(1)=0v(1) = 0, v(−x)=v(x)v(-x) = v(x) and v(x−1)=−v(x)v(x^{-1}) = -v(x) for x≠0x \ne 0. The set {x∈K:v(x)≥0}\set{x \in K : v(x) \ge 0} is a valuation ring of KK. Some texts write valuations multiplicatively, with the reverse order; for Γ⊆ℝ\Gamma \subseteq \R the map x↦cv(x)x \mapsto c^{v(x)} with 0<c<10 < c < 1 is a non-Archimedean absolute value.
