Valuation ring
Definition
Let be an integral domain with field of fractions . The ring is a valuation ring if for every nonzero , at least one of and lies in .
Remarks
Example: for a prime , the ring is a valuation ring. Each nonzero rational number is with and prime to ; if then , and if then . Non-example: is not a valuation ring, since neither nor is an integer. Every field is a valuation ring of itself. If is a valuation on a field , then is a valuation ring with fraction field . Conversely, let be a valuation ring with fraction field . Then , ordered by when , is a totally ordered group. The quotient map extends to a valuation whose ring is . A valuation ring is a local ring, with maximal ideal the set of non-units, and any two of its ideals are comparable by inclusion.
