van der Waals equation
Builds on Equation of stateIdeal gasThermodynamic temperature
Definition
Let be the molar gas constant and let and be constants of a substance. The van der Waals equation is the following equation of state. It relates the pressure , the volume , the thermodynamic temperature and the amount in moles: A fluid that satisfies it is a van der Waals fluid.
Remarks
Solved for the pressure and written with the molar volume , it reads The constant is the excluded volume per mole, and is the reduction of pressure by the attraction between molecules. The critical point, where , is at , and . Below the isotherms are not monotone, and the part with is unstable.
Example: for carbon dioxide, approximate values are and . They give , close to the measured critical temperature of about , because they are usually fitted to the critical data. In the limit , or at large , the equation becomes , the equation of the ideal gas.
Non-example: the Redlich–Kwong equation of state is not a van der Waals equation. Its attraction term depends on and is not of the form with constant .
The equation predicts the critical compressibility factor for every fluid, while measured values are mostly between and ; it is qualitatively right but not quantitatively accurate.
