Velocity-addition formula
Statement
Let and be inertial frames, where moves with velocity along the axis of and . Let be the Lorentz factor of . Let a particle have constant velocity in . Then its velocity in is In particular, for motion along the axis, .
Remarks
Proof idea: apply the inverse Lorentz transformation , , , to the differentials along the world line and divide by . Example: and give , below . If and then , and gives , so the speed of light is the same in both frames. In terms of rapidities, collinear velocities add: , which is the addition formula of . For and the formula reduces to the Galilean rule .

For a student
The formula is a direct computation from the Lorentz transformation, and it shows that boosts along one axis form a group isomorphic to via rapidity. The transverse components get the extra factor because of time dilation. For non-collinear velocities, the composition of two boosts is not a pure boost but a boost followed by a rotation, the Wigner rotation.
