Definition

Let 𝔤\mathfrak{g} be a complex semisimple Lie algebra with Cartan subalgebra 𝔥\mathfrak{h} and a choice of positive roots Φ+\Phi^+. Let 𝔫+=⨁α∈Φ+𝔤α\mathfrak{n}^+ = \bigoplus_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \mathfrak{g}_\alpha and let 𝔟=𝔥⊕𝔫+\mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{h} \oplus \mathfrak{n}^+ be the Borel subalgebra. For λ∈𝔥∗\lambda \in \mathfrak{h}^*, let ℂλ\C_\lambda be the one-dimensional 𝔟\mathfrak{b}-module on which h∈𝔥h \in \mathfrak{h} acts by λ(h)\lambda(h) and 𝔫+\mathfrak{n}^+ acts by 00. Let UU denote the universal enveloping algebra. The Verma module of highest weight λ\lambda is the 𝔤\mathfrak{g}-module M(λ)=U(𝔤)⊗U(𝔟)ℂλ.M(\lambda) = U(\mathfrak{g}) \otimes_{U(\mathfrak{b})} \C_\lambda. Here 𝔤\mathfrak{g} acts by left multiplication on the first factor.

Remarks

The vector vλ=1⊗1v_\lambda = 1 \otimes 1 has weight λ\lambda, is killed by 𝔫+\mathfrak{n}^+, and generates M(λ)M(\lambda). With 𝔫−=⨁α∈Φ+𝔤−α\mathfrak{n}^- = \bigoplus_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \mathfrak{g}_{-\alpha}, the map u↦uvλu \mapsto u v_\lambda is a linear isomorphism U(𝔫−)→M(λ)U(\mathfrak{n}^-) \to M(\lambda), by the Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt theorem. Every module generated by a vector of weight λ\lambda killed by 𝔫+\mathfrak{n}^+ is a quotient of M(λ)M(\lambda). M(λ)M(\lambda) has a unique maximal submodule, and the quotient is the irreducible module L(λ)L(\lambda). Example: for 𝔰𝔩2(ℂ)\mathfrak{sl}_2(\C) with basis e,f,he, f, h, put vk=fkvλv_k = f^k v_\lambda and write λ\lambda for λ(h)\lambda(h). Then hvk=(λ−2k)vkh v_k = (\lambda - 2k) v_k, fvk=vk+1f v_k = v_{k+1} and evk=k(λ−k+1)vk−1e v_k = k(\lambda - k + 1) v_{k-1}. If λ=n∈ℤ≥0\lambda = n \in \Z_{\ge 0}, then evn+1=0e v_{n+1} = 0, the vectors vkv_k with k>nk > n span a submodule isomorphic to M(−n−2)M(-n-2), and the quotient is L(n)L(n) of dimension n+1n + 1. Non-example: L(n)L(n) itself is generated by a highest weight vector vv, but fn+1v=0f^{n+1} v = 0, so u↦uvu \mapsto uv is not injective on U(𝔫−)U(\mathfrak{n}^-) and L(n)L(n) is not a Verma module.
