Von Neumann entropy
Builds on Density matrixTrace of a matrixLogarithm of a matrixEigenvalue
Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space of finite dimension , and let be a density matrix on . Let be the eigenvalues of , counted with multiplicity. The von Neumann entropy of is with the convention . Here is the trace, and is defined by functional calculus, which agrees with the matrix logarithm on the support of .
Remarks
The base of the logarithm fixes the unit: base gives bits, base gives nats.
Example: for the maximally mixed state , all eigenvalues equal , so . For a pure state , the eigenvalues are , so .
Non-example: the Shannon entropy of the diagonal entries is not in general. For , a pure state, the diagonal entries give , while .
Always , with exactly for pure states and exactly for . The entropy is invariant under unitary conjugation, , and it is concave in .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
