Definition

Let SS be a finite set of configurations, and let H ⁣:S→ℰH \colon S \to \mathcal{E} be an energy function onto a finite set ℰ\mathcal{E}. The density of states is g(E)=∣{σ∈S:H(σ)=E}∣g(E) = \abs{\set{\sigma \in S : H(\sigma) = E}}. Fix a symmetric proposal rule on SS, a flatness threshold θ∈(0,1)\theta \in (0, 1) and a final tolerance ϵ>0\epsilon > 0. The Wang–Landau algorithm keeps an estimate ln⁡g~(E)\ln \tilde g(E) and a histogram h(E)h(E) for E∈ℰE \in \mathcal{E}, and a modification factor ln⁡f\ln f.

  1. Start with ln⁡g~(E)=0\ln \tilde g(E) = 0 and h(E)=0h(E) = 0 for all EE, ln⁡f=1\ln f = 1, and any configuration σ\sigma.
  2. Propose σ′\sigma' from σ\sigma and accept it with probability min⁡(1,g~(H(σ))/g~(H(σ′)))\min\big(1, \tilde g(H(\sigma)) / \tilde g(H(\sigma'))\big).
  3. After each proposal, let EE be the energy of the current configuration, and increase ln⁡g~(E)\ln \tilde g(E) by ln⁡f\ln f and h(E)h(E) by 11.
  4. When hh is flat, that is, h(E)≥θ⋅1∣ℰ∣∑E′h(E′)h(E) \ge \theta \cdot \frac{1}{\abs{\mathcal{E}}} \sum_{E'} h(E') for all EE, reset hh to 00 and replace ln⁡f\ln f by 12ln⁡f\frac12 \ln f.
  5. Stop when ln⁡f<ϵ\ln f < \epsilon; the output is g~\tilde g, an estimate of gg up to a constant factor.

Remarks

With a fixed g~\tilde g, the walk of clause 2 is at energy EE with long-run probability proportional to g(E)/g~(E)g(E) / \tilde g(E). So if g~=g\tilde g = g, it visits each energy level equally often. The updates of clause 3 push g~\tilde g towards gg, and the shrinking factor ff makes the corrections finer. The constant is fixed by a known value, such as ∑Eg(E)=∣S∣\sum_E g(E) = \abs{S} or the number of ground states. Example: run the method for the Ising model on a finite graph. Then the partition function at every inverse temperature β\beta is estimated by ∑Eg~(E)e−βE\sum_E \tilde g(E) e^{-\beta E}, and this gives the Boltzmann distribution of the energy. Non-example: with ln⁡f\ln f kept fixed, the estimate never converges, because each visit changes g~\tilde g by a fixed amount and the statistical error stays of order ln⁡f\ln f. The method is not a Markov chain with a fixed stationary distribution, since the weights change during the run. With the halving schedule the error can saturate. A schedule in which ln⁡f\ln f decreases like 1/t1/t in the late stage is used to avoid this.
