Weak operator topology

Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space with inner product , and let be the algebra of bounded operators on . The weak operator topology on is the coarsest topology such that, for all , the map , , is continuous.
Remarks
Equivalently, it is the topology generated by the seminorms for . A net converges to in this topology if and only if for all .
Example: on , let be the right shift, . Then , and by the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality its modulus is at most , which tends to . So in the weak operator topology, while for all .
Non-example: let with and , and let . For , the numbers do not converge, so has no limit in this topology.
The weak operator topology is coarser than the strong operator topology, which is coarser than the norm topology. The closed unit ball of is compact in the weak operator topology. Multiplication is separately continuous but not jointly continuous when is infinite-dimensional, and is continuous.
