Definition
Let be a topological group. Let be the Banach space of bounded continuous functions with the uniform norm. For and , let . A function is weakly almost periodic if the set is relatively compact in the weak topology of .
Remarks
Using right translates instead of left translates gives the same class of functions. Grothendieck's double limit criterion gives an equivalent form. The function is weakly almost periodic if and only if, for all sequences and in , whenever both iterated limits exist. Every almost periodic function is weakly almost periodic, since norm-compact sets are weakly compact.
Example: on , let . Its translates are the functions , which lie in the closed subspace . Every bounded linear functional on is for some with , so weakly as . Hence every sequence of translates has a weakly convergent subsequence, with limit a translate or , and by the Eberlein–Šmulian theorem is weakly almost periodic.
Non-example: on , let . Take and . Then for each , while for each . The iterated limits are and , so is not weakly almost periodic.
On a locally compact group, every continuous function vanishing at infinity and every coefficient of a unitary representation is weakly almost periodic.
