Weight of a representation
Builds on Lie algebraRepresentation of a Lie algebraDual space
Definition
Let be a Lie algebra over a field , let be an abelian subalgebra of , and let be a -module. Let be the dual space of . For put . A weight of with respect to is a with . Then is the weight space of , its nonzero elements are weight vectors, and is the multiplicity of .
Remarks
The main case is a complex semisimple Lie algebra with a Cartan subalgebra . Example: , with , and . Here and , so the weights are the forms with and , each of multiplicity one. Non-example: the form with is not a weight of , since has no nonzero vector in its kernel. For the adjoint representation, the nonzero weights are the roots and . If is a root vector, then . For a nilpotent one often uses generalised weight spaces, the vectors killed by a power of for every , as in weight space.
