Definition
Let be a Lie algebra over a field , and let be a representation of on a vector space . Let be a Lie subalgebra of , and let be a linear form on , an element of the dual space. The weight space of for is the subspace If , then is a weight of , and the nonzero elements of are weight vectors of weight .
Remarks
Example: let act on , and let be spanned by . For , the weight space is the line , since and the only eigenvectors of for are the multiples of . Non-example: for , the space is , since is not an eigenvalue of , so this is not a weight. If is spanned by one element , then is the eigenspace of for the eigenvalue . The generalized weight space is the larger space of the such that for each some power of kills . For nilpotent the space is the direct sum of these spaces when is algebraically closed of characteristic and is finite-dimensional.
