Wheeler–DeWitt equation
Builds on ADM formalismHamiltonian constraintCanonical quantizationRiemannian manifold
Definition
Let be a closed three-manifold and let be a functional of Riemannian metrics on . Let be the scalar curvature of , the cosmological constant, and the DeWitt supermetric, where . The Wheeler–DeWitt equation (in units ) is at every point of . It is obtained from the Hamiltonian constraint of the ADM formalism by the canonical quantization rule .
Remarks
The wave function must also satisfy the momentum constraint , which says that is invariant under diffeomorphisms of . The product of two functional derivatives at the same point is ill defined, and the ordering of and the derivatives is ambiguous, so the equation is formal. Example (minisuperspace): restricting to round three-spheres of radius reduces the equation to an ordinary differential equation in , which is the setting of the Hartle–Hawking state and other proposals. Non-example: the time-dependent equation is not of this form; here and no external time appears.
