Whitehead tower

Summary

The Whitehead tower of a space XX is a sequence of spaces ⋯→X⟨2⟩→X⟨1⟩→X\cdots \to X\langle 2 \rangle \to X\langle 1 \rangle \to X. The stage X⟨n⟩X\langle n \rangle is nn-connected and has the same homotopy groups as XX above degree nn. It is dual to the Postnikov tower: instead of discarding the high homotopy groups, it discards the low ones. Its first stage is the universal cover, and each further stage is a fibration over the previous one with fibre an Eilenberg–MacLane space. It is used to compute homotopy groups with spectral sequences and to define string structures through the stage BO⟨8⟩BO\langle 8 \rangle.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
