Definition
Let be a path-connected space with base point, and let denote the -th homotopy group. A Whitehead tower of is a sequence of pointed spaces , , with . It comes with pointed maps for . For each , the composite must satisfy:
- is -connected, that is, for all .
- induces an isomorphism for all .
The space is the -connected cover of .
Remarks
For a CW complex a Whitehead tower exists and each is unique up to weak homotopy equivalence over . Up to homotopy, can be taken to be a fibration, and then its fibre is an Eilenberg–MacLane space . For a CW complex, is the universal cover. The tower is dual to the Postnikov tower: is the homotopy fibre of .
Example: for , , since is -connected. The cover is a fibration with fibre .
Non-example: for , the identity as fails clause 1, since . The universal cover satisfies both clauses.
