Definition
There is no single accepted definition of a wormhole for all spacetimes. This node uses the standard form of a static, spherically symmetric, traversable wormhole, due to Morris and Thorne. Let and be smooth functions. The Lorentzian manifold with coordinates and metric is a wormhole with throat at if:
- has its global minimum at , with ; the sphere is the throat;
- and tends to a finite limit as , so that both ends are asymptotically flat;
- is bounded, so that never vanishes and there is no horizon.
Remarks
Example: the Ellis wormhole, with and for a constant . Check: has its minimum at , , and is bounded.
Non-example: and satisfy clauses 1 and 3 but fail clause 2, since .
Consequence for the matter content: for the null vector , a computation gives . At the throat and , since is a minimum. If , then , and the Einstein equations force : the null energy condition fails there. The ends and may be two universes, or, after identifications far away, two regions of one universe.
