Energy conditions
Summary
Energy conditions are inequalities on the stress–energy tensor of matter in general relativity that express that energy density is not negative in a suitable sense. The main ones are the null, weak, strong and dominant energy conditions. The Einstein equations alone allow any metric if the matter is arbitrary, so such conditions are needed to prove general theorems. They are hypotheses of the singularity theorems, the positive energy theorem and the area theorem for black holes.
