Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a time-oriented four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold with signature (−,+,+,+)(-, +, +, +). Let TT be a symmetric (0,2)(0, 2)-tensor field on MM, the stress–energy tensor, with trace tr⁡T=gabTab\tr T = g^{ab} T_{ab}. A tangent vector XX is timelike if g(X,X)<0g(X, X) < 0 and null if g(X,X)=0g(X, X) = 0 and X≠0X \ne 0. The energy conditions on TT are the following, each required at every point of MM.

  1. Null energy condition: T(k,k)≥0T(k, k) \ge 0 for every null vector kk.
  2. Weak energy condition: T(X,X)≥0T(X, X) \ge 0 for every timelike vector XX.
  3. Strong energy condition: T(X,X)−12(tr⁡T) g(X,X)≥0T(X, X) - \frac12 (\tr T)\, g(X, X) \ge 0 for every timelike vector XX.
  4. Dominant energy condition: the weak energy condition holds, and for every future-directed timelike XX, the vector Ya=−TabXbY^a = -T^a{}_b X^b is future-directed causal or zero.

Remarks

The weak and the strong conditions each imply the null condition, by continuity, since null vectors are limits of timelike vectors; the dominant condition implies the weak one. The strong condition does not imply the weak one. If gg solves the Einstein field equations with zero cosmological constant, the strong condition is equivalent to RabXaXb≥0R_{ab} X^a X^b \ge 0 for all timelike XX, where RabR_{ab} is the Ricci tensor.

For a perfect fluid with energy density ρ\rho and pressure pp, the conditions read: null, ρ+p≥0\rho + p \ge 0; weak, ρ≥0\rho \ge 0 and ρ+p≥0\rho + p \ge 0; strong, ρ+3p≥0\rho + 3p \ge 0 and ρ+p≥0\rho + p \ge 0; dominant, ρ≥∣p∣\rho \ge \abs{p}.

Example: dust, a perfect fluid with ρ≥0\rho \ge 0 and p=0p = 0, satisfies all four conditions.

Non-example: a positive cosmological constant acts like a perfect fluid with p=−ρp = -\rho and ρ>0\rho > 0. It satisfies the null, weak and dominant conditions, but ρ+3p=−2ρ<0\rho + 3p = -2\rho < 0, so it fails the strong energy condition.
