Definition

Let AA and GG be groups, and let GG act on a set Ω\Omega, written (g,ω)↦gω(g, \omega) \mapsto g\omega. Let AΩA^\Omega be the group of all functions f ⁣:Ω→Af \colon \Omega \to A with the pointwise product, that is, the direct product of ∣Ω∣\abs{\Omega} copies of AA. For g∈Gg \in G and f∈AΩf \in A^\Omega, let g⋅f∈AΩg \cdot f \in A^\Omega be the function (g⋅f)(ω)=f(g−1ω)(g \cdot f)(\omega) = f(g^{-1}\omega). This defines an action of GG on AΩA^\Omega by automorphisms. The wreath product A≀ΩGA \wr_\Omega G is the semidirect product AΩ⋊GA^\Omega \rtimes G for this action. Its elements are the pairs (f,g)(f, g) with f∈AΩf \in A^\Omega and g∈Gg \in G, and the product is (f,g)(f′,g′)=(f (g⋅f′),  gg′).(f, g)(f', g') = (f \, (g \cdot f'), \; g g'). The subgroup AΩA^\Omega is the base group. When Ω=G\Omega = G with the action by left multiplication, the group is the regular wreath product, written A≀GA \wr G.

Remarks

The order of a finite wreath product is ∣A≀ΩG∣=∣A∣∣Ω∣∣G∣\abs{A \wr_\Omega G} = \abs{A}^{\abs{\Omega}} \abs{G}.

Example: let A=C2A = C_2 and let G=C2G = C_2 act on Ω={1,2}\Omega = \set{1, 2} by swapping. Then A≀ΩGA \wr_\Omega G has order 22⋅2=82^2 \cdot 2 = 8. It is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 88, the symmetry group of a square. The base group C2×C2C_2 \times C_2 consists of the identity, the half-turn and the reflections in the two diagonals. The swap is the reflection in an axis through the midpoints of two opposite sides.

Non-example: the direct product AΩ×GA^\Omega \times G has the same underlying set, but there GG does not move the functions at all. Its multiplication differs from that of the wreath product when A≠1A \ne 1 and GG moves some point, because then g⋅f≠fg \cdot f \ne f for some gg and ff.

For G=SmG = S_m acting on {1,…,m}\set{1, \dots, m}, the group Sk≀SmS_k \wr S_m is the subgroup of SkmS_{km} that preserves a fixed partition of kmkm points into mm parts of size kk. The group C2≀SnC_2 \wr S_n is the group of signed permutations, of order 2nn!2^n n!. For an infinite set Ω\Omega, the group defined above is the unrestricted wreath product, built from all functions Ω→A\Omega \to A. The restricted wreath product uses only the functions with f(ω)=1f(\omega) = 1 for all but finitely many ω\omega.
