Definition

Let a homogeneous isotropic linear elastic material have Lamé parameters λ\lambda and μ\mu, with μ>0\mu > 0 and 3λ+2μ>03\lambda + 2\mu > 0, so that λ+μ>0\lambda + \mu > 0 as well. Consider the state of uniaxial stress σ=s e1⊗e1\sigma = s \, e_1 \otimes e_1 with s≠0s \ne 0, where σ\sigma is the Cauchy stress tensor. Let ε\varepsilon be the strain that produces this stress. The Young's modulus of the material is E=σ11ε11=μ(3λ+2μ)λ+μ.E = \frac{\sigma_{11}}{\varepsilon_{11}} = \frac{\mu (3\lambda + 2\mu)}{\lambda + \mu}.

Remarks

The ratio does not depend on ss, because the law is linear. Example: inverting σ=λ(tr⁡ε)I+2με\sigma = \lambda (\tr \varepsilon) I + 2\mu \varepsilon for σ=s e1⊗e1\sigma = s \, e_1 \otimes e_1 gives tr⁡ε=s/(3λ+2μ)\tr \varepsilon = s/(3\lambda + 2\mu) and ε11=s(λ+μ)μ(3λ+2μ)\varepsilon_{11} = \frac{s(\lambda + \mu)}{\mu(3\lambda + 2\mu)}, which is the formula above. With the steel values λ≈120\lambda \approx 120 GPa and μ≈80\mu \approx 80 GPa it gives E≈80⋅520/200=208E \approx 80 \cdot 520 / 200 = 208 GPa.

Non-example: in uniaxial strain the sides are held fixed, so that only ε11≠0\varepsilon_{11} \ne 0. Then σ11/ε11=λ+2μ\sigma_{11} / \varepsilon_{11} = \lambda + 2\mu, the P-wave modulus, which is larger than EE when λ>0\lambda > 0. The definition requires the sides to be free of stress.

For a bar of length LL and cross-section AA pulled by a force FF, the elongation is ΔL=FL/(EA)\Delta L = F L / (E A). For anisotropic materials Young's modulus depends on the direction of the pull.
