Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field, let be an affine variety with ideal , and let . For , its differential at is the linear form with the formal partial derivatives. The Zariski tangent space of at is the linear subspace
Remarks
If , then is the kernel of the Jacobian matrix , because when .
Intrinsic form: let be the maximal ideal of the coordinate ring of functions vanishing at . Then is isomorphic to the dual vector space of . The same space is the dual of the cotangent space of the local ring , so only depends on a neighbourhood of and is defined for every variety.
Example: for the parabola at , , so is the line , of dimension .
Example: for the cusp at the origin, the polynomial generates and both of its partial derivatives vanish at , so has dimension .
One always has .
